Find yourself in the cloud

Journey into this heartland of the northern highlands and home of tourist destination Sapa, and breathe the rarefied air. Let yourself discover the ways of the mountain people and their life in the clouds and you just might find a little more about yourself along the way.

Lao Cai is home to 27 colourful ethnic groups. Its red roofed capital, Lao Cai City, is located on the Chinese border where it is possible with the right paperwork, to walk across the bridge to China. The majestic Red River flows from China through the town as it makes its way hundreds of kilometres south to Hanoi.

The popular mountain town of Sapa is only a 45 minute drive away. An alpine oasis with an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes, bars and colourful hill tribe hawkers, Sapa sits literally within the clouds. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind, enjoy the view and spoil yourself with a spa treatment – or for the more energetic to trek to nearby villages.

Local hill tribe people journey daily into town for the Sapa market place and the laneways and streets are filled with the colours of their vibrant costumes.

Attractions include the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, Vietnam's highest peak of Mt Fansipan (3143m), bustling Sapa Town, Bac Ha and village markets and close encounters with numerous hill tribes and traditional villages. You will also find ancient temples, pagodas, waterfalls and caves both around Sapa and throughout the province.
