Dien Bien Phu is a small city in the north-west corner of Vietnam. Situated in a beautiful valley near the Laotian border, the area has special significance to the modern State of Vietnam as the site of the decisive battle which led to the end of French colonial occupation

This relatively young town was established in the mid-19th century to help secure the remote region against bandits from Thailand, Laos and China. It is the site of the famous Vietnamese victory over the French foreign army in 1954 which was the trigger for the French to move out of Vietnam conceding defeat.

The area is inhabited by hill-tribe people, most notably the Tai and H’mong. A journey to this remote region provides a vista of picturesque mountain terrain and glimpses of ethnic villages living a lifestyle unchanged for centuries.
